At Port Douglas State School we believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in purposeful learning experiences. The Australian Curriculum clearly defines what is to be taught, and our teachers use their knowledge of students' interests, strengths and capabilities to identify the most effective way to teach curriculum content.  Age-appropriate pedagogies support Port Douglas State School teachers to apply a range and balance of teaching approaches and characteristics of quality teaching in their classroom practice.

Student Learning Goals are displayed as part of a Learning Ladder or Learning Wall.  The components of an effective Learning Wall include:

  • Unit Title and Objective
  • Marking Guide
  • Chosen 'I Can' statements
  • Vocabulary based anchor charts
  • Strategy/procedural based anchor charts
  • Examples of work from students to support 'I Can' statements
  • Current student goals
