Port Douglas State School sport
At Port Douglas State School, sport, health and physical education are valued by all. It is the schools view that sports and physical activity influence children in positive ways. Through sport students learn about commitment, teamwork and relationships which all lead to positive personal and physical development. Research has shown physical activity improves self-esteem, increases the brain's function, supports brain nourishment, leads to greater energy levels, contributes to the ability to concentrate and makes the individual feel good.
The health and physical education curriculum offers students opportunities to develop knowledge, processes, skills and attitudes necessary for making informed decisions about:
Promoting the health of individuals and communities;
Developing concepts and skills for physical activity;
Enhancing personal development.
Cross-country
This event is held on beautiful Four Mile Beach and the surrounding area. All students from Prep to year 6 train for, and participate in this event. For students age ten and over, this event is a selection trial for the Douglas District Inter-school Cross-country and Trinity Coast North Cross-country.
Athletics - Track and Field
Again all students from Prep to year six participate in these sports. In the weeks leading up to the event, training is conducted during physical education lessons. The program is comprised of a number of sprint and distance running events along with the field events of high jump, long jump and shot put. All track events are competitive, with successful students earing points for their sports house. Students turning nine or older, complete the field events in competitive program, while the younger students enjoy a participation based program. Every student competes in a relay team ensuring a positive and meaningful experience for all. The Port Douglas State School Athletics Carnival is a selection trial for the Douglas District Athletics Sports and Trinity Coast North Athletics. Students turning ten or older are eligible for selection.
Swimming
The Port Douglas State School Swimming Program is second to none. Every child has the opportunity to engage in a two week block of swimming lessons. Each lesson is 45 minutes long and is conducted by a qualified Austswim Teacher with over twenty years of experience. Because the students attend lessons every day, the skill building program delivered via explicit instruction results in faster and more extensive improvements for individuals. The program culminates with two swimming carnivals, one for the juniors and one for students turning nine or older. This event is a selection trial for the Douglas District Swimming Sports.
